The ambulance committee at Millaa Millaa on the Atherton Tableland hired a pump trolley (ed hand car), manually propelled, from the QGR from 1 January 1922 for 25cents per week. In April 1926, that trolley was away for repairs, and it was not until October that another was supplied. It is not known when this arrangement ceased but by 1929 there was a rail motor ambulance at Atherton available for use on the Millaa Millaa branch line.
(ed note - see image of a typical hand car of that era below. Where on earth did the sick / injured person locate themself on this vehicle?)
Atherton was 40 miles (64km) from Millaa Millaa and there was a closer hospital at Malanda, 18miles (29km) away. By about 1932, the Millaa Millaa QATB had a contrivance powered by a Harley Davidson motor cycle engine. It had a canvas canopy with a cellophane view hole at the front, and the observer sat behind that. The driver was at the back, and there was a bunk for the patient at one side. This vehicle was reported in the "North Queensland Register"of 13 April 1974 page 18, but there is no QGR file on it, nor does it appear in the 1929 and 1935 lists of ambulance rail motors in QGR files or General Appendix.
